HIDING IN PRIVATE PLACES is a 65,000-word memoir describing my painful but triumphant journey of recovery from breast and liver cancer, drug addiction, and severe abuse. My story begins in the small town of Joliet, Illinois, where I was raised in a fundamentalist Pentecostal family. I was married. I then rebelled from my family and the conservative traditions of the church. When I was just 20 years old I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy. Then, hoping to find freedom and a life of my own, I left my husband and ran away to Chicago where I ended up living on the streets for three years. While homeless I sank into the depths of alcoholism, drug addiction, physical abuse and despair. In later years I was violently raped and mentally tortured by my second husband until he abandoned me and my baby daughter. Though I continued to struggle for years with cancer and my own personal demons, I ultimately handed my life over to God and watched in awe as He washed away my pain and healed my recurring cancer. My story describes the many lessons I have learned by coming out of hiding and putting my life in God’s hands.
